Compassion in Action: The Clean Slate Project

Medical debt is breaking families here in Missouri and across the country. It’s the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States — a uniquely American problem that we have the power to fix!

These crushing bills rarely stem from poor choices. They come from unexpected illnesses, accidents, and emergencies that could happen to any one of us. Across the nation, more than 1/2 of Americans say they’ve delayed or skipped medical care because of what they owe, and those burdened by debt are 3x more likely to struggle with depression or anxiety.

Medical debt doesn’t just cause hardship — it often pushes families over the financial edge. A national study found that 58.5% of bankruptcy filers said medical expenses contributed to their bankruptcy, and two-thirds cited either medical bills or illness-related income loss as a factor.

That’s why The Clean Slate Project was created — an initiative to erase millions in qualifying medical debt for families across Franklin, Warren, St. Charles, and St. Louis Counties. Our project aims to eliminate all qualifying medical debt in these four counties by raising just over $100,000 — enough to wipe out over $17.7 million in medical debt. Every dollar donated erases about $177 in debt, turning compassion into impact for Missouri families.
