More Than $200 Million in Medical Debt Relief Being Provided in Miami-Dade County

Made possible by generous donors to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and coordinated through Undue Medical Debt, a national medical debt relief nonprofit

Miami, FL – April 17, 2026 – More than 120,000 Miami-Dade County residents will be cleared of over $200 million in medical debt, thanks to generous donors to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and coordinated through the national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt.

Qualifying families will be receiving letters from Undue Medical Debt in the mail in two weeks’ time, notifying them that some or all of their medical debt is being erased. There is no application process, as families are being identified automatically based on income to ensure those most burdened are helped.

“We are proud to facilitate this life-changing endeavor, made possible by generous and visionary Federation donors and Undue Medical Debt,” said Greater Miami Jewish Federation President and CEO Scott Kaufman. “Jewish tradition commands us not to stand by while others suffer. Medical debt can lead to devastating consequences, including bankruptcy, stress and even worsened health. Acting to relieve these burdens is our obligation, and enables us to help restore the dignity, stability and respect every person deserves.”

Launched in 2014 by former debt collection industry executives, Undue Medical Debt works with hospitals, health systems and physicians’ groups to purchase past-due medical debts in large portfolios for pennies on the dollar and then erases the debt belonging to those least able to pay. One dollar donated erases, on average, $100 of medical debt.

This relief is provided to qualifying Miami-Dade County residents who earn at or below four times (400%) the federal poverty level (about $100,000 for a family of three) or with medical debt that is 5 percent or more of their annual income. Medical debt relief is source-based, meaning the nonprofit can only erase qualifying medical debts it can acquire from partners like hospitals, physicians’ groups or collection agencies. As such, medical debt relief cannot be requested and recipients are notified out of the blue.

According to Scott Kaufman, the program with Undue Medical Debt is part of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s longstanding history of providing vital solutions for some of the most pressing issues of the day. “Founded at the start of the Holocaust, our organization has worked tirelessly throughout the decades to provide billions of dollars in support to both the Jewish and general communities, here in Miami and across the globe,” he noted. “It is said that ‘one who saves a single life is as if they saved an entire world.’  We know that addressing medical debt in Miami will greatly improve many lives.”
